LGBT hate crime: let's stop it together
Within Kemptown, there is a specialist neighbourhood policing team which includes the LGBT Police Liaison Officer who works alongside venues and businesses, carrying out high visibility patrols of the area and to provide reassurance. Sussex Police take crime against the LGBT community very seriously and have specialist officers who are based in the Anti-Victimisation Unit to investigate cases of hate crime. They can work with other agencies to assist and provide support, but need your information and support to bring offenders to justice.
When hate crime or violent incidents occur in a cruising ground such as Dukes Mound (AKA the bushes) the police will take them very seriously, regardless of any sexual activity that was taking place at the time. They will support you and investigate the offences in accordance with your wishes. Permanent CCTV cameras have existed in the area for at least 5 years and allow the Police to target serial offenders of hate crime.
High visibility police patrols are nothing new and act as a deterrent to the thugs. The officers, specially trained for the role, are at Dukes Mound for your reassurance and protection from violent crime.
when crimes happen we need to work together
A small number of people commit a large percentage of hate crime. To stop it we need to gather information about these crimes and the people that commit them.
what's vital...
Proof + Evidence + Information
More Witnesses = Better Evidence
You can remain anonymous if you choose, but if you are willing to provide a statement you will not necessarily have to go to court. The police and the Anti-Social Behaviour Team can seek ASBOs as an alternative to prosecution.
Let’s target them so they don’t target us - what you know might be the final piece of the puzzle.
